The need to communicate is common to all human beings. Many people do not communicate in the regular ways of our society and need to augment their communication. People who do not speak, have cognitive difficulties, are deaf and blind, do not process visual information, or have visual impairments along with other disabilities have very few communication aids designed for their use. Tactile Colour has the potential of bridging this communication gap by using the senses of touch and sight together and is being used as an additional method of communication for people without sight and who have speech impairments or disabilities. Its use inspires caregivers and clients alike. Tactile Colour is being used to promote integration for people with multiple disabilities into their immediate environment and the wider community.

The possibility of making tactile picture boards as Alternative and Augmentative Communication aids has been made a reality with funding from the Victoria Foundation, the Pacific Coast Savings Foundation, and the Vancouver Foundation. Special Thanks and acknowledgment to Dorothy Tait, Communication Specialist and Kardel Consulting Services for their ongoing support of and work on both phases of the Augmentative Communication Using Tactile Colour (ACUTC) project.

The results from the first phase of the ACUTC project has been inspiring, for example, one client was working with 14 symbol tiles for seven different activities and seven different people in her life while another has created shopping lists. There are symbols to make choices between different beverages, or just to communicate yes or no.

For the second phase of the ACUTC project, we are organizing an Advisory Committee of professionals and interested others, such as family members to oversee and help further this work. Please contact us via email or snail mail if interested in hearing more about the voluntary Advisory Committee, to learn more about the Augmentative Communication Using Tactile Colour project or to find out about the other services available through the Tactile Colour Communication Society.

If you are interested in more information about ACUTC, enrolling in future training courses, receiving samples of Tactile Colour, or finding out more about how Tactile Colour can be used for the benefit of the clients you serve, please contact us. Thank you for your interest.
