Linda Bartram and Maurice Hartle
"Valley ofeaven"

Linda has been working with Tactile Colour for almost ten years, but this is her first piece of art for a show. After living in Victoria for many years, she has recently moved to Oliver, BC, an area renowned for orchards and vineyards.

Experience Making This Piece:
The postal code there is V0H 1T0 and the way folks remember it is: Valley of Heaven in the Okanagan. The scene depicted in her picture shows the view from just up the hill from her house, a view that struck her with its beauty. She can almost see it, she says: "At least I think I can, because the mountainside on either side of the valley is so close and when the sun shines a certain way I have (or had three years ago) a visual impression of the scenery. I wanted to capture it with Tactile Colour to share with others."
Maurice Hartle's comments: "I have been into the art scene all my life. As a portrait and landscape artist working mainly in oil, I found making this piece a challenge. I found it very difficult to create a picture of the Okanagan with Tactile Colour, particularly the layering to give the perception of depth by touch. But I enjoyed the work! I hope that everyone who has an opportunity to touch this piece is able to appreciate what we have portrayed."

Tactile Colour Used: Rough gritty green, hard wavy brown, fine gritty blue hard bumpy yellow, very fine gritty and fuzzy grey (not a Tactile Colour), very smooth white, gridded black, tan, dashed line purple, soft bumpy orange, soft rubbery red.

Tactile Description:
In the foreground on the right is a leafless tree in gridded brown. There are spikes of gritty green grass in the centre foreground at the bottom of the page, and a tree stump in hard wavy brown towards the left. The top of the stump is shaped like a bowl, perhaps a fruit bowl, and sitting in the bowl are a bunch of grapes in dashed line purple, and some cherries in soft rubbery red. To the left of the stump are some apples also in soft rubbery red and to the right, some peaches in soft vumpy orange. All these fruits are grown in the area. The ground behind the stump and past the grass is dried straw depicted in hard bumpy yellow. Beyond the straw, the valley in very fine gritty grey stretches from left to right, from foreground to background. The hillsides rise on either side of the very fine gritty grey valley and are striated; first a rough gritty green nearest the valley bottom where the ground is irrigated and the fruit is grown, then a rough hard wavy brown changing to very slightly bumpy tan desert, and finally a very smooth white in the misty distance. The sun is rising, showing hard bumpy yellow rays rising behind the very slightly bumpy tan hillside on the left. A bird in gridded black hovers in the morning sky shown in fine gritty blue. On the blue sky, fuzzy grey clouds have been added in a texture that is not Tactile Colour.
