This piece has been made with an older set of Tactile Colour.
Jennifer is an elementary school teacher working in Vancouver. She was first introduced to Tactile Colour at UBC, while working as a tutor for the Disability Resource Centre. When the Tactile Colour exhibition was at UBC, she was given the opportunity to help out with the show.
Experience Making This Piece:
While working with the UBC exhibition, I developed an appreciation for the many practical uses of Tactile Colour, as well as a general understanding of how the actual material works and subsequently how it doesn't work. This knowledge was quite handy when it came time to putting together the present art piece. I am quite thrilled by the results.
Tactile Colour Used: Fine gritty Blue, soft rubbery Red, hard bumpy Yellow and soft bumpy Orange
Tactile Description:
Attached to a beige painted backdrop you will find two forms, the form of a person and the form of a framed picture. Begin with the form of the person. This person is coloured all fine gritty blue, except for two out-stretched hands, coloured soft rubbery red. The person you are touching can move. Move the person in a motion that imitates opening and closing a book. Open the book to discover the person is blue and red on the back. Close the book. The person's hands can be made, using a slight pressure, to touch the second form, a framed picture. The frame of the picture is made of wood. Inside the frame is a picture of another person with out-stretched hands. This person is also coloured blue with red hands. The hands in this case are reaching up toward the sun. The sun, which you will find in the top right corner, is represented by a very small light bulb, Moving away from the light bulb, your fingers will come in contact with a circle of red, followed by a circle of soft bumpy orange, and finally a circle of hard bumpy yellow. Both the sun and the person are surrounded by beige colour, mirroring the beige of the backdrop.
