"a touch of spring"
Though legally blind since birth, Celu has been interested in art from childhood. Celu studied art in high school and university, but she has also learned a great deal of painting technique from TV art shows. Her medium of choice is acrylic paint. Though her command of fine detail isn't as good as someone with full sight, she delights in the complexity of shading and colour that she can achieve in this medium. Her work over the years has been mostly scenery and drawings of people and animals. Most of the inspiration for her pictures comes from her imagination, or scenes of nature.
Experience Making This
Piece:
The project was difficult
for me to get into. It was so different from anything I had ever tried
before that I found it hard to come up with even an idea for the piece.
What Mia and I finally came up with was adapting a couple of the designs
from a quilting book I had.
I also had difficulty
cutting and laying out this type of medium onto the poster board. For this
reason I asked the assistance of a friend, Mia Shinbrot, in doing the actual
layout of the piece, which made it more of a joint venture than my work
has ever been. How Mia and I worked it out was that I drew the templates
for the design, and she cut them out and placed them on the board.
A TOUCH OF SPRING
Tactile Colours Used: Purple, pink, green, brown, gray, yellow, tan, red and orange.
Tactile description:
There is a large tufty
purple and fuzzy pink orchid with rough gritty green leaves and pink buds
in the centre, surrounded by a ridgy brown diamond-shaped border. In the
four triangular corners outside the diamond there are four different coloured
birds sitting on brown branches with green leaves. The background is a
dark forest green cardboard, darker than the emerald green of the leaves.
